I am AJ Grossman. I am a painter and quilter.
I, like history and the layers in my work, represent layers of history. My encaustic paintings have layer upon layer of wax. Each layer is applied and then scrapped back to reveal the previous layer. I think of my paintings as my past to present.
Many of my paintings reflect my life. Born and raised in the grit of New York City, my paintings start with dark colors. Then the colors get brighter to reflect the sunshine of Florida. As I apply another layer of wax with a bold color, I then scrape back to reveal some of the past.
Other times my paintings reflect the geometric shapes I use in quilt making. Quilts also have layers and reflect our history.
Either way, I find that the scraping of the wax or the sewing of quilts to be meditative practices that help me to stay calm in a not so calm world.
AJ currently is part of the Artist in Residence program at History Ft. Lauderdale
