The Broward College Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery will launch a new art exhibition, “What is Withheld,” with an opening reception on Thursday, August 29 from 6 – 9 p.m. and a lecture at 7:30 p.m. The exhibition will run through September 18.

“What is Withheld” features paintings and sculptural installations by Yvette L. Cummings. The work explores the complicated path of youth, beauty, and femininity, through the viewpoint of a sexual abuse survivor. Cummings also uses colorful and patterned environments to represent the repetitive nature of memory and showcase how camouflage can signify the ways that people reveal their true selves. In contrast, the figures staring out from the paintings are meant to challenge how society views adolescence and the expectations that come with beauty.

Yvette L. Cummings received her MFA from the University of Cincinnati and currently teaches at Coastal Carolina University.

The Broward College Rosemary Duffy Larson Gallery is in Building 6 on the A. Hugh Adams Central Campus at 3501 SW Davie Rd., Davie, FL. Entrance to the gallery is free and open to the public. Hours are Monday to Saturday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., with extended hours on Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m., or by appointment.
