Same reason, different season! Whether it’s traditional bells in our hands or on your feet, The Salvation Army of Broward County invites you make some pre-Christmas noise this summer while you run, walk or roll to “krush” poverty and homelessness at its Kettle Krush 5K set for Saturday, July 23, at 7 a.m., at Markham Park (16001 West State Road 84 in Sunrise). WPLG Local 10 Reporter Roy Ramos will serve as the special guest host for the fifth anniversary event. An option for those (both in the region and beyond) who wish to participate virtually at home is also available. This all-ages event is designed to raise awareness and funds for families in need. Registration is open, now, at https://bit.ly/KettleKrush5K2022
“On our fifth anniversary Kettle Krush 5K, we couldn’t be more excited to unite the community in health and prosperity with a festive ‘Christmas in July’ spirit to help our Broward County residents in need,” said Major Stephen Long, area commander for The Salvation Army of Broward County. “We’re thankful for the ongoing support of Local 10 and Roy Ramos as well as our sponsors, volunteers and participants who tirelessly strive to make a difference and raise the spirits of impoverished families.”
For the past four years, nearly 400 participants have raised awareness and funds to “krush” homelessness and hunger in South Florida. The funds raised support the work of The Salvation Army of Broward County, which provides essential resources for community members in need to get out of poverty and become financially stable. The Salvation Army serves over 50,000 Broward County residents, every year, and more than 70% of its funding comes directly from the community – individuals, groups and businesses.
The race is named after The Salvation Army’s iconic Red Kettles which are staffed during the holidays to collect funds for families in need. Each holiday season, The Salvation Army raises hundreds of thousands of dollars and distributes more than 7,000 gifts to families below the poverty line in Broward County.
The racecourse at Markham Park is sanctioned by the USATF, and the race will be timed by AccuChipUSA, Inc. Awards will be given to runners in “Top 3” categories and age groups. A FREE commemorative race t-shirt will be given to all registrants.
The Salvation Army of Broward County’s Kettle Krush 5K Participants are encouraged to dress in holiday and Christmas attire. Registration fees are $10 for kids (ages 2 – 8), $25 for students (18 and under) and seniors (60+) and $30 for registrants (19 and over). Team registration is $25 per person for teams of five or more. Markham Park entry fee will be waived for all Kettle Krush 5K participants. Parking will also be FREE and available directly across from the Runner’s Pavilion area.
The Salvation Army of Broward County’s Kettle Krush 5K is sponsored by Humana, FPL, Edd Helms and MaPo Builders with support from Dom and Sharon Pino.
