Our Speakers

Cecil Konijnendijk, founder of Nature Based Solutions Institute, Barcelona, Spain, has over 25 years of experience studying, teaching, and advising on aspects of urban forestry and nature-based solutions. A Dutch national, he has lived and worked in Europe, Asia, and North America. Since 2016 he has been a professor of urban forestry at the University of British Columbia. Widely published, Cecil helped found the leading academic journal, “Urban Forestry & Urban Greening,” and edited seminal textbooks such as “The Routledge Handbook of Urban Forestry.” Cecil has advised int’l organizations such as FAO, and a range of national and local governments.

Mayor Dean Trantalis was elected mayor of Fort Lauderdale in March 2018, previously serving on the City Commission representing District 2 for eight years. As mayor, Dean represents Fort Lauderdale on the Florida League of Cities, Broward County Tourism Development Council, the Metropolitan Planning Organization, Greater Fort Lauderdale Alliance, Broward Workforce Development Board and Re-Open Florida Task Force. As mayor, he is committed to improvements to the city’s infrastructure, responsible growth, community involvement in development decisions, increased fiscal responsibility in city government and maintenance of the great quality of life in our neighborhoods.
