Jaquira Díaz is the guest author and will speak about her debut memoir, Ordinary Girls, which is the astonishing story of her childhood growing up in housing projects in Puerto Rico and Miami. As a self-proclaimed “delinquent,” Díaz was a street fighter, a runaway, a high school dropout, and a suicide risk. Though she struggled with her mom’s mental illness, her dad’s absence, and making sense of her queer and biracial identity, Díaz is now a successful writer who has been published in many media such as Rolling Stone and the Guardian.
META Broward is a newest initiative of the Broward Public Library Foundation. The mission is to provide unique opportunities for professional and cultural growth by leveraging Broward County Library’s direct access to thought leaders and community resources. Events will occur monthly; some as members-only, others open to the public. All events will be focused on education, community engagement, and networking opportunities, while helping to create longtime supporters of local libraries.
The event is open to all those interested in learning more about META Broward. Food and drinks will be available. Díaz’s book will be available for purchase with the opportunity to have them signed by the author.
