Ignacio Berroa from Havana, Cuba began his musical education at age 11, ultimately studying at Cuba’s National Conservatory. By 1975 Ignacio had become Cuba’s most prominent drummer. A great Afro-Cuban drummer, Ignacio also had an affinity for jazz. The 1980 Mariel boatlift, landed him in New York City where he was soon introduced to Dizzy Gillespie, spending the next 10 years as Dizzy’s drummer. Since then, Ignacio has worked with a who’s who of Latin and American artists and also leads his own band.
