Broward County Library presents a free, online program series on Facebook Live, “Cultural Conversations at the Center,” with guest author Matthew J. Pettway, from 4 to 5:30PM EST on Thursday, October 1st hosted by the African American Research Library & Cultural Center (AARLCC), 2650 Sistrunk Boulevard, Fort Lauderdale, FL 33311, 954-357-6282.

Pettway will discuss his book Cuban Literature in the Age of Black Insurrection; Manzano, Plácido, and Afro-Latino Religion, University Press of Mississippi 2020.

Pettway’s emphasis on African-inspired spirituality as a source of knowledge and a means to sacred authority for black Cuban nineteenth-century writers deepens our understanding of Manzano and Plácido not as mere imitators but as aesthetic and political pioneers.

Sponsorship for the Cultural Conversations at the Center is provided by the Friends of the African-American Research Library and Cultural Center, the Cuban Research Institute (CRI) | Steven J. Green School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA), the Wolfsonian Public Humanities Lab (WPHL), and the Center for Humanities in an Urban Environment of Florida International University (CHUE).

Community partners also include the African & African Diaspora Studies | (SIPA) of FIU.

Cultural Conversations at the Center is AARLCC’s monthly series and features intellectually stimulating programs with thought and industry leaders, scholars, educators, filmmakers, artists and others whose work celebrates and illuminates aspects of Black history and culture.
