Cooking with Cathy is hosted by fitness industry veteran Cathy Whitt, community wellness specialist at Holy Cross Health. Whitt is a trained diabetes prevention lifestyle coach who has been teaching students and adults in the Broward County School System. The first one is set for noon on Tuesday, May 4 at

“These open sessions provide additional support for our diabetes prevention program and diabetes self-management education and support participants, as well as anyone in the community who is striving to live a healthier life,” said  Samantha Willins, Prevention Specialist at Holy Cross Health. “Health and wellness are a priority in Cathy’s life, and she wants to share that passion with others.”

Each month Whitt will choose recipes that are well-balanced and easy to make at home. During Cooking with Cathy, she will review recipe ingredients and directions and prepare the dish. After the demonstration, she will open the segment up for Q&A and group discussion.

“I want to make health and wellness personal and fun, so it makes adopting healthy habits an easy adjustment,” said Whitt. “Eating right is key to a healthy lifestyle. You don’t have to be a professional chef to enjoy cooking.”

The classes will be held via Zoom. To receive more information about upcoming Cooking with Cathy sessions, register at

The CDC-recognized Diabetes Prevention Lifestyle Change Program at Holy Cross focuses on supporting a journey to improve overall health and well-being. Throughout the year-long program, a trained lifestyle coach assists participants in developing new skills around nutrition, physical activity and stress management, all designed to reduce the risk of developing type 2 diabetes and other chronic conditions.

According to the American Diabetes Association, in 2018, 34.2 million Americans had diabetes with 7.3 million of those undiagnosed, while 14.3 million Americans 65 years of age and older have diabetes. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, 88 million American adults age 18 and older have prediabetes. Of those with prediabetes, more than 84% don’t know they have it. Those who are prediabetic have an increased risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and stroke.
