The South Florida Institute on Aging (SoFIA) will host the Aging in South Florida Symposium presented by AARP on Friday, June 21 from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Huizenga College of Business at Nova Southeastern University, 3301 College Avenue in Davie. The event, which is sponsored by AARP will take a closer look at the challenges for our aging population while presenting helpful resources and solutions to help people thrive as they age.
The symposium will cover a broad spectrum of hot-topic aging issues focused around four pillars: aging with purpose, caregiving, the economics of aging and LGBT senior advocacy.
Each pillar will include a variety of panel topics for attendees to choose from based on individual interests. Sessions will address areas of concern such as creating job opportunities for older workers, reframing how we talk about aging, medical marijuana education for caregivers, the needs of male family caregivers, community resources for caregivers and dementia caregivers, home sharing benefits, financial security, becoming an LGBT-friendly community and more.
Speakers from leading companies such as AARP, MorseLife Health System, VeHadarta, Voyage, SAGE, Silvernest, Older Adults Technology Services and the Jewish Federation of Broward will join the conversation and lead the breakout sessions throughout the morning and afternoon where participants can ask questions and collaborate on important topics. The symposium will include breakfast and a luncheon, sponsored by Humana, where an important announcement – one year after the launch of the landmark Silver Tsunami Report – will be made by the Community Foundation of Broward, Jewish Federation of Broward, and United Way of Broward County.
