SUMMARY:ART AS MEDICINE LESSONS FROM THE GILDED AGE
DESCRIPTION:Co-presented by NSU Art Museum and NSU Health.\n\nWelcome by Dr
 . Chad A. Perlyn\, Executive Vice President\, Chief Medical Officer\,\nDea
n\, Dr. Kiran C. Patel College of Allopathic Medicine.\n\nBetween the acce
ptance of germ theory in the 1880s and the antibiotic revolution of the tw
entieth century\, works of art enjoyed a unique moment in which they funct
ioned in medicinal terms for both artists and viewers. This talk considers
\, for example\, how the painter Abbott Thayer addressed his fear of disea
se by turning his children into the subject of art following the death of
his wife from tuberculosis. Works of art also defined the public perceptio
n of Robert Louis Stevenson\, one of the nineteenth century's most famous
writers and tuberculous patients\, who was pictured by John Singer Sargent
and Augustus Saint-Gaudens through a romantic lens that treated his illne
ss as a mark of talent. These examples suggest how Gilded Age artists tran
slated disease into another language--a visual language with therapeutic p
 owers.\nSaturday\, October 24\, 2026\n10 - 11 am\nAt NSU Art Museum Fort L
 auderdale\nFree for Members | $16 for Non-Members\nFree for NSU Students\,
Faculty &amp\; Staff\n\nFor more information and tickets click here.
