Joe Venuti was the first great jazz violinist who was in constant demand for recordings, studio work and club appearances. Performing with plenty of spirit, Venuti delivered inspired improvisations that were technically brilliant. Guest violinist Glenn Basham recreates the sounds of the 1920s when Venuti performed in Paul Whiteman’s band. Bix Beiderbecke, a cornetist with a cool delivery, was one of the greatest and most influential jazz musicians of the 1920s, although he died in 1931 at the age of 28. This concert will include behind-the-scenes anecdotes, colorful commentary about the artists and jazz that is not only historical, but still remarkable today. This must-see performance kicks off the Mary Porter Jazz Film Festival!
